How much does artificial grass cost?

Standard costs by square metre, a calculator to work it out for you and 4 things you should consider when buying artificial grass.

If you’re planning an event or you’re sick of the dogs ripping up the yard, artificial grass is a great alternative to the real deal.

With expenses for turf laying and relaying quickly adding up, artificial grass gives you a lookalike for a fraction of the price. It’s also easier to maintain and much longer-lasting than real grass.

But you already know all that. That’s why you’re looking into it. You’re here with a more specific question: how much does artificial grass cost?

Artificial grass cost calculator

If you want to know the standard costs for artificial grass per square metre, keep reading. But, if you want us to work it out for you with our nifty cost calculator, you are right where you need to be.

Check out this calculator to work out how much Matshop’s artificial grass will cost you:

Artificial grass cost per metre

Working out the artificial grass cost per square metre is a good way of comparing different retailers. Where retailers differ in sizing, it’s easy to make the mistake of thinking smaller sections of turf are cheaper.

Generally, artificial grass costs $20-40 per square metre. The standard width of artificial grass in Australia is 3.7m, and those pieces can then be cut to your desired length. That means a standard square piece of turf will cost between $273.8 and $547.6.

At Matshop, our artificial grass is industry-standard width (3.7m). Depending on the product, we provide lengths of between 2 and 25 metres. We also offer ready-cut standard sizing in thick pile artificial grass if you want something smaller or differently shaped.

4 Things to consider when buying artificial grass

It isn’t just the size of your area that will affect the price. Other aspects of the product, as well as the company you buy from, will influence the price and how much value you get for that price.

Writing down the features that you need can make it easier to ensure a product meets your specification. The cost of artificial grass depends on:

  1. Quality

Firstly, something that we always have to say about our products is that they’re not the cheapest. If you are looking for the cheapest mats possible, we are not the place for you. But that’s fine – we don’t want to be the cheapest.

If you are looking to save money, however, we are a perfect match. While our products do cost a little more initially, they are guaranteed to outlast any of the cheap products you can buy from big retailers.

The reason our mats a priced slightly higher comes down to quality. We have spent the past 13 years working to make the best mats in Australia, so anything low quality won’t do. Matshop mats are an investment.

When it comes to artificial grass, you’re going to pay more for better products – but that investment will save you money when you don’t have to replace them 6 months, 1 year or even 5 years later.

  1. Thickness

As with most products, more material means a higher cost. So, thicker pile artificial grass tends to cost more.

Thicker pile pieces are ideal for anyone that wants to pretend their artificial grass is real. They look completely natural and provide a comfortable surface underfoot. Thick pile can be used inside or outside and looks just like the lawns you would expect to see in gardens.

Thin pile artificial grass looks more like the perfectly manicured lawns of a football field. The thin pile gives it excellent scraping abilities, so it can remove dirt from shoes as they walk over. It is extremely durable and ideal as a permanent flooring solution.

  1. Additional features

Depending on where you are planning to lay your artificial grass, you might need to make sure it has additional features. Weather, traffic levels and general environmental factors can all affect the safety and efficacy of any type of matting.

If you are planning to use your artificial turf outside in a wet or sunny area, you need to make sure the mat can deal with these conditions. If people will be walking over its surface inside, you need to take adequate precautions to prevent it from sliding around.

All Matshop artificial grass has been treated with a UV-resistant coating that allows it to be left in the sun without fading. They also feature drainage holes that prevent water pooling and sweating – reducing the likeliness of slips, trips and falls occurring in your area.
